About my work

My forms are usually large, wheel-thrown vessels and tableware that are altered and marked. On surfaces I use slips, oxides and layer glazes, or leave pieces raw for natural ash deposits to form.

Each piece is fired for over 100+ hours in my Anagama kiln, using an ancient technique of altering the kiln’s atmosphere, using fire, air and time to develop depth to the clay body surfaces.

When the kiln reaches temp, the wood ash drifts and melts onto the pots, forming a natural glaze with greenish tones, translucent, with depth and complexity. I prefer to use our local clay with its inclusions and personality, with subtle irregularities. Perfection doesn’t interest me.

About me

There is something almost human about an old pot, as though its form holds a soul or spirit. It’s not always a grand revelation but rather a subtle feeling, strong, wise, humble, or proud. When creating pieces, I want this same presence, a silent resonance.

My work is influenced by the clay history of my Maltese heritage, leaning towards forming amphora-like vessels that carry both function and ritual.

Other current clay pursuits include being president of North Coast Ceramics, and I also sit on the board of Ceramic Arts Queensland.
