About

Artist Bio

I create on Bundjalung Country in the far north of NSW and have been working with clay as my primary medium since 2012. My journey into ceramics began with two years of intensive studio training under Ray Cavill and Liz Stops, where I developed a deep passion for wood firing.

After several years of firing alongside Suvira McDonald, I took the leap and built an Anagama kiln on my property in Middle Pocket. I now fire four times a year, sharing my knowledge and teaching wood firing to both new and returning students.

In 2022, I expanded my practice by studying advanced form development with Bill Powell. My exploration continued in 2025 with a mentorship under renowned American ceramicist Simon Levin, refining and experimenting with wood-firing techniques and advanced ceramic development.

Since 2020, my work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the Unique Woodfirers exhibition at Clay Gulgong 2024. I was also invited as a guest speaker on the Woodfirers Panel Q&A, where I had the privilege of discussing wood firing alongside other influential potters.

In late 2024, I was honoured to be appointed President of North Coast Ceramics, allowing me to further contribute to the ceramic arts community, and also sit on the board of Ceramic Arts Queensland.

My work is deeply influenced by ancient traditions and my Maltese heritage, where feasting and gathering are at the heart of celebration.

I specialise in large, wheel-thrown vessels that I alter and mark using slips, oxides, layered glazes, or leave raw to embrace the natural ash deposits formed during wood firing. Each piece undergoes a 100 hour reduction firing in my Anagama kiln, fuelled by fallen Sally Wattle, allowing fire and ash to create their own unique imprint on the clay.

Artist Statement

My deep connection to ceramics is rooted in ancient traditions, particularly those of my Maltese heritage. The vast museum pottery collections in Malta have profoundly influenced my work, revealing a quiet yet powerful presence that transcends time. Seeing these ancient vessels evoked a deep sense of connection, their journey extending far beyond the lives of their makers.

There is something almost human about an old pot, as though its form holds a soul or spirit. It’s not always a grand revelation but rather a subtle feeling, strong, wise, humble, or proud. Some might call it animism, but for me, it is a quiet recognition, a whisper from the past.

When creating my pieces, I seek to instill this same presence, a silent resonance, like the hum of an ancestor’s photograph. My goal is not to tell a specific story but to evoke something older, something felt rather than understood. In those moments of connection between the form and observer, the soul of the pot gently whispers.
