Potter, Dirt Burner, Teacher at Middle Pocket Pottery
Venessa makes on Bundjalung Country in Northern NSW, forming evocative, large-scale ceramic vessels and functional ware, rooted in ancient traditions with power of fire.
Middle Pocket Pottery, is a warm and welcoming place.
Come fire with us!
Several times a year, Venessa hosts an 11-day wood firing event at her Anagama kiln. Open to both emerging and experienced potters, these sessions invite participants into every stage of the process: sourcing wood, preparing glazes, loading the kiln, and firing, day and night, for over 100 hours.
The experience ends with the much-anticipated kiln opening, revealing the unpredictable beauty that only wood, flame, and time can create.
It’s a rare chance to slow down and connect through clay, community, and fire.
These events offer an opportunity to learn, experience and engage with the elemental process of woodfiring and share knowledge and stories around the fire.
“There is something almost human about an old pot. When creating my work, I seek to instill that same presence, a silent resonance, like the hum of an ancestor’s photograph.”
